Carol Ann Campbell

carolann poloroidCarol Ann Campbell is an award-winning medical journalist now using her insider's knowledge to strengthen the media profiles of her clients in the world of health care. She understands what health reporters need to write their stories and produce their radio and television programs.

She worked for The Star-Ledger for ten years, where she was named New Jersey Press Association Journalist of the Year in 2008. Accepting her award, she told a banquet room full of journalists that their profession was changing rapidly and they must adapt – but not lose the fundamentals of good communication. Tell the people something they don't already know. Make it clear. The mantra is as true on the front page of a newspaper as on Facebook, Twitter, an RSS feed or press release.

Prior to starting her own public relations firm, Carol Ann worked as director of media relations at Saint Michael's Medical Center in Newark. Reporters often sought her out for advice. She referred to herself as the "Macy's Santa" of PR. Sometimes she sent reporters to "Gimbels," or another health organization that better fit their story. In return, she got loyalty and often the first call from reporters looking for stories and experts.

A graduate of the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University, Carol Ann also worked for newspapers in York, Pa., and Birmingham, Ala. Her freelance articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Kaiser Health News and Inside Jersey magazine. For 10 years she worked at The (Bergen) Record, where she wrote a general interest column. She has received honors from journalism organizations and health groups, such as the Spirit of Hospice Award from the New Jersey Hospices and Palliative Care Organization and a Reporting Excellence award from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.

At Campbell Health Media, Carol Ann leads a team of web designers, social media experts and public relations professionals.

She lives in Montclair, where she and her husband, Ken Harrison, are raising three children.
